Cat Approved Romcoms (from a cat)

Hello.

My name is Joyce “Joy” Peterson. I own the hooman, Sharon, and her family. (I find it is better they think they are in charge. But of course, I am a cat. We all know who rules around here.) For instance, the hooman left her laptop open while she’s “resting her eyes.” That’s what she calls. We all know it’s a nap. So I’ve decided it’s time for me to share with you something I am passionate about.

No, it is not catnip. Or bottle caps. Or that dangling string from the hooman’s hoodie.

It is books. Yes, yes, I know. You think, cats can’t possibly read and be this cute; we’d be too powerful. But I’m here to tell you we are this powerful. We’re just biding our time. (I can’t talk about that though.)

Instead today, I will share with you books I love. Are there cats in all of these books? Obviously. And you should read them. Because I told you to and I’m a cat, my job is to boss you around.

The Second Chance Year by Melissa Wiesner

Why I Love It: The hoomans rescue a tiny kitten who is the real star. Nobody likes to mention that though. The hooman, Sharon, went on and about about the bit of magic when the main character wakes up one morning to find out it’s exactly one year earlier before her life imploded. She has a second chances to make things right. Can she do it?

One in a Million by Lindsey Kelk

Why I Love It: Dr. Samuel Page’s cat, Wellington, is dreamy. A real page stealer, if I’m honest. Sure, his hooman is currently being given a “makeover” by a woman in the same office building who is sure she can make him a real social media presence. Of course, they develop feelings. Sharon said it reminded her of some meow-sical named My Fair Lady. The only sad part? Not enough Wellington.

Play Me Once by Carina Taylor

Why I Love It: Two words: cat café. How could I not love a book where an entire café dedicated to cats is part of the book. My hooman gushed about it being an enemies-to-lovers, work place romance or some such nonsense. I got tired of the that. I wanted more scenes with the cats. Would recommend.

Betting on the Brainiac by Melanie Jacobson

Why I Love It: What’s not to love about a litter of tiny kittens that need rescuing? The hoomans in the book end up fostering the kittens together which is very nice. We love people who take care of us and pet us and feed us and treat us like the royalty we are. The hooman waxed on about these two who started as friends and become more and she said something about Oliver being the perfect nerdy book boyfriend. Whatever. Can we talk more about the kittens?

Enemies in Paradise by Brittany Larsen

Why I Love it: What is not to love about a band of cats coming together to rescue a woman with a pest problem? Sure, sure, that one guy is allergic to them but they are the real heroes in this book. Willy Wonkat has a special place in my heart. Sharon, the hooman, says this books is funny and sweet and there is a hockey player and forced proximity. Whatever all that is about. I was just hoping there would be an exact count of the number of mice my fellow cats caught.

The Fake Out by Sharon M. Peterson

Why I Love It: In this one, Kevin the Grumpy Cat is pure gold. He has no problem being his grumpy self in all situations. His hooman, Mae, is grumpy, too. They both have their reasons. Mae is a librarian in a small town. She meets Chris, who is a football player with big golden retriever energy. (I am not happy with this mention of dogs but…) They become fake engaged. This is my favorite of them all. (Okay, my hooman wrote this one. I have to say that or she won’t buy the good cat treats.)

My hooman says all of those are closed door romcoms and can be found on Kindle Unlimited.

Here are some other honorable mentions:

  • The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery
  • Bet Me by Jennifer Crusie (Open door)
  • Melt for You by J.T. Geissinger (Open door)
  • Lovelight Farm by B.K. Borison (Open door)
  • The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman
  • With You Forever by Chloe Liese (Open door)
  • First Comes Scandal by Julia Quinn (Open door)
  • The Cupid Chronicles by Courtney Walsh

I hope you have enjoyed this list. I took time out of my busy afternoon nap schedule to write this, after all. I hope you’ll check out my hooman’s book. She needs to sell a bunch of them. I have my eye on a deluxe cat tree. It’s shaped like a mushroom.

With all My Meows,

Joy

PS. Do you have any more cat-centric romcoms I can add to my reading list? I need them all.

If you don’t already, you should follow Sharon’s newsletter and check out her other book recs like THIS ONE.
