Epistolary Romcoms You Should Read

Epistolary books are some of my favorite to read. Add in letters, emails, text messages, and any other written communication between our characters and I’m all in.

Also not a shock that for a year and a half after meeting my husband, we emailed each other every single day. In fact, he was the reason I got my first email address over twenty-five years ago.

What can I say? I’m a sucker for words. (Yet, again, not a shock.)

Here’s a list of five romcoms/romance in which letters, emails, text messages, and passive-aggressive sticky note feature into the story and I love them.

  1. Dear Mr. Knightley by Katherine Reay

If you’re a fan of mysterious benefactors who pay for graduate school for a woman who grew up in the foster care system, then this is for you. As Sam writes letters to “Mr. Knightley” and keeps him abreast of her progress, she learns so much about herself and those around her. Such a great read!

2. The Flatshare by Beth O’Leary

When Tiffy finds herself in need of a place to live after a bad break up, she stumbles upon Leon’s flat. Leon works night; Tiffy works during the day. They literally never see each other. It’s the perfect solution. They keep in touch through notes passed back and forth and the more they get to know one another, the more feelings start to grow.

3. To Sir, With Love by Lauren Layne

With very strong You’ve Got Mail vibes, this romcom features two people who connect on an online dating app and hit it off. But neither of them realize, they’ve already met in person… and they can’t stand each other. Emails and messages PLUS enemies-to-lovers? Sign me up!

4. Authentically, Izzy by Pepper Basham

Bookish Izzy longs to meet The One but spending all her time with fictional characters doesn’t exactly help her goal. But when her cousin sets up an online dating profile for her, she’s shocked to discover Brodie. He lives an ocean away but he gets all her Lord of the Ring references. Can a long distance friend turn into something much more? (YES, YES, IT CAN.)

5. The Fix Up by Sharon M. Peterson

Single mom Ellie and Gil are strangers who have just inherited a house, cafe, and twenty acres… almost. The catch is that they must live on the property for six months for their claim to be valid. The problem? Gil wants survive the next six months, sell everything, and move on. But Ellie sees this as her future. And the bigger problem? In between passive-aggressive sticky notes and acts of service, their feelings start to grow in a big way.
